ABOUT
Philippine Legacy and Cultural Alliance (PLACA) is an Ontario-registered non-profit organization founded in 2019 by a group of cultural-minded individuals, entrepreneurs, artists, and community advocates.
It is celebrated for its inaugural offering of the 6th Taste of Manila street festival, staged in partnerships with ABS-CBN/TFC and TOMP, held in August 2019 at Little Manila in Toronto, Ontario. An estimated 200K+ people from all over Canada and beyond attended the popular Filipino festival during the 2-day weekend.
FUN PHILIPPINES FOOD AND MUSIC FESTIVAL
In July 2022, PLACA presented its hallmark event popularly known as FUN PHILIPPINES TORONTO STREET FESTIVAL staged at the 1 km stretch of Bathurst St. from Wilson Ave to Laurelcrest Ave., in North York, Ontario. A two-day street festival celebrated with Filipino warmth and hospitality; Fun Philippines has become a gateway to Filipino culture at its best. Its inaugural festival attracted over 200K attendees over the weekend. In July 2023, Fun Philippines was attended by no less than the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and newly minted Mayor of Toronto, Olivia Chow.
On July 2024, PLACA has moved FUN PHILPPINES FOOD & MUSIC Festival to Harbourfront Centre, a premiere downtown waterfront location, and is now a 3-day fun-filled festival!
PLACA has launched projects such as the Government of Ontario-funded and highly successful virtual event All For One (AFO) in 2020 and 2021. In partnership with TFC (The Filipino Channel), AFO was a response to the government’s call for activities that supported communities amidst the pandemic lockdowns. All For One has now become an annual live event celebrating Canada Multiculturalism Day every June 27.
In 2021, PLACA also launched the documentary series, Making It In Canada, that highlighted successful Filipinos in Ontario. In partnership with TFC (The Filipino Channel), it reached a customer base of 2.5 million worldwide and ran until Q1 of 2022. This was part of the Filipinos Making Waves digital event series that was funded by the Government of Ontario and featured a cooking show, online radio featuring Filipino music through the years, a drama anthology podcast and a talk show meant for the community to reconnect and be entertained.
During the pandemic, PLACA also spearheaded a Barrier-free Pop-up Vaccine Clinic for “undocumented” individuals and/or anyone with no OHIP or health cards to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and helped support the government’s efforts toward a safer and healthier community. This endeavour was successfully accomplished on two occasions at the Bathurst Parkette, North York, in collaboration with North York General Hospital.
Every year PLACA celebrates its hardworking volunteers by honouring these individuals during its annual Volunteers Appreciation Dinner and Awards Night, presented in cooperation with community partners. It is an evening of unity, camaraderie, and a much-deserved recognition for a job well done
PLACA is proud of its passionate volunteer base and committed community partners. It constantly creates meaningful ways to engage members of the community to work well together and impress upon fairness, recognition and inclusivity.
